Wine at 5

The 6th secret to longevity according to Dan Buettner and Blue Zones is Wine @ 5! Buettner writes: Wine @ 5
People in all Blue Zones (except Adventists) drink alcohol moderately and regularly. Moderate drinkers outlive non-drinkers. The trick is to drink 1-2 glasses per day (preferably Sardinian Cannonau wine), with friends and/or with food. And no, you can’t save up all weekend and have 14 drinks on Saturday.   Residents at Wesley Homes' communities in the Seattle Tacoma area are welcome to enjoy a glass of wine or beer with dinner. This wasn't always the case given Wesley Homes' Methodist upbringing. Like the Adventists, Methodists were discouraged from drinking alcohol. Today, Wesley Homes residents come from a wide variety of faith traditions and they enjoy a glass of wine on occassion. The Blue Zones finding promotes responsible use of alcohol: 1 glass of wine for women and 2 for men, daily. Here are a few tips (from Sodexho) to keep in mind when pairing food and wine: Look for balance in your food and wine; neither should overwhelm the other. Match mild foods with mild wines; bold, flavorful foods with bold, flavorful wines. If the dish is acidic, go with an acidic wine; a Pinot Noir with a tomoato tapenade, for instance. If the sauce is the dominant character in the dish, pair its richness with the wine. If there is no sauce, match the wine to the meat. Eat, drink and be merry!
