Recognizing “Community Treasures”: Celebrating the Gifts of Age

Wesley Homes celebrates the gifts of age by hosting a ceremony recognizing community members for their volunteer service to the Seattle region and beyond. The celebration will take place at Wesley Homes Des Moines campus, Wednesday, May 28, 2008 from 3:00-4:00 p.m. in The Terrace Auditorium, 816 A. 216th Street in Des Moines, Washington.

The event is planned as part of a national celebration week honoring America’s older adults sponsored by the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (aahsa.org).

In 2007 and 2008 more than 65 Wesley Homes residents and future residents volunteered over 1,000 hours of service that have directly enriched lives and enhanced neighborhoods. These individuals donated their time, energy and resources to

• City of Des Moines
• King County Libraries
• Seattle Art Museum
• Pregnancy Aide
• Senior Centers
• New Orleans Katrina Relief
• Habitat for Humanity

• So. King Co. Fire and Rescue
• Griffin Home
• Children’s Hospital
• Numerous churches
• Americorps
• Regional Medical Center
• AARP
• IRS tax assistance
• Ronald McDonald House
• Highline School District

Des Moines Mayor Bob Sheckler, Chief of Police Roger Baker, and Deb Murphy, CEO of Washington Association of Homes and Services for the Aging are among a number of community leaders planning to attend the recognition ceremony. The event features community not-for-profits that depend on the volunteer efforts of older adults.
